Me at Uchisar, Turkey
My name is J and Some Never Awaken is where I share my life and travel adventures through stories, videos and photographs. I’m 29, from the city-state of Singapore. I really enjoy writing, and used to journal online during my schooldays but stopped once I started working and moved on to writing personal zines. Now I’ve decided to kickstart online writing again because it is much more convenient for my fleeting thoughts.

What is this “Some Never Awaken?”

“Some Never Awaken” are the last 3 words from a quote in The Diary of Anaïs Nin (Vol. 1: 1931-1934).

You live like this, sheltered, in a delicate world, and you believe you are living. Then you read a book… or you take a trip… and you discover that you are not living, that you are hibernating. The symptoms of hibernating are easily detectable: first, restlessness. The second symptom (when hibernating becomes dangerous and might degenerate into death): absence of pleasure. That is all. It appears like an innocuous illness. Monotony, boredom, death. Millions live like this (or die like this) without knowing it. They work in offices. They drive a car. They picnic with their families. They raise children. And then some shock treatment takes place, a person, a book, a song, and it awakens them and saves them from death. Some never awaken.

Why “Some Never Awaken?”

I first came across this quote in mid-2014 after spending a year contemplating leaving my previous job of (then) 3 years. The fact that there exists a possibility to never awaken from being stuck in a system was extremely disconcerting.  The URL is to remind myself to live, always.
